Wolf Facts
Wolves are mammals and members of the dog family. They have thick coats of fur and long, bushy tails. Their senses of smell and hearing are very good.
Wolves are meat eaters. They usually hunt in packs.
Wolves are thought to mate for life.
Gray wolves, or timber wolves, range in color from white to gray to black. Although they were once plentiful in the Northern Hemispere, their numbers have been greatly reduced. Today in the United States, Gray wolves are found mainly in Alaska.
Red wolves are smaller than gray wolves. They live in several places in the southern part of the United States.
Wolves live in burrows, which they usually dig into the dirt or snow. They also can be found living in small rock caves.
